Retiring US Ambassador to Ethiopia calls for an independent investigation in Tigray region

The outgoing US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Michael Raynor, called for an independent investigation in Tigray regional state. Becoming yet another official to claim the presence of Eritrean forces in Tigray, the ambassador stated: “we continue to be troubled by the activities of Eritrean actors in the region”. Raynor added: “we continue to call for an immediate halt to, and independent investigation of, all credible reports of atrocities, sexual violence, and human rights violations in Tigray and other places of the country, such as Metekel.” The Ambassador also mentioned his concern over the ethnic violence around the country, and the threat it poses to achieve the country’s true potential. Referring to the situation in Tigray, Raynor said, after almost three months, “we are still not seeing enough humanitarian assistance reach the most vulnerable areas.” Much more needs to be done urgently to ensure that humanitarian organizations, both Ethiopian and international, have full and secure access to the region to provide life saving support to the millions of people who are suffering, the Ambassador added. The Ambassador further called on all parties to cease any hostilities, ensure the protection of all civilians in Tigray including refugees and humanitarian workers; and uphold international human rights and humanitarian laws. Ambassador Raynor will travel back to the US on Saturday after completing over three years of tenure in Ethiopia.
